We are all quite familiar with deer despite the fact that they are not very easy to see in the wild. They are a very timid wild animal and with good reason: many a predator stalks them on a daily basis thus they always have to be on the lookout for possible danger. With the release of Disney's "Bambi" in 1945, and subsequent re-releases since, the world has viewed deer in a different light. Children certainly have a new appreciation for these lovely animals which is evident with the sale of deer plush. It would be no surprise to learn that deer plush became a popular purchase after "Bambi" was viewed.
Certainly, the sale alone of the Bambi character would have sky rocketed and deer plush would have been well on their way to new heights in the stuffed animal world.White-tailed deer are the most numerous and widely distributed of all large animals found in North America. This white-tailed deer is the most recognizable to children. Deer plush made in Bambi's likeness are also the white-tailed deer species and they have been designed to replicate all if his coloring and distinct markings. There are of course, other options of deer plush besides Bambi. In online stores, for example some have a 28 inch long deer with a full set of antlers. This is one deer plush not to be missed! Baby deer, called fawns, are often left for very long periods of time by their mothers. Fawns have a spotted coat and almost no scent at all of which acts as natural camouflage so as to keep predators from finding them. The female, called a doe, does return at different times to feed her baby. It has happened where people have discovered a fawn hidden away in a secluded area and immediately think it' been abandon by its mother, but that's simply not the case.
It's essential, however, that no human scent be found on a fawn as the doe will likely reject it.There are 16 sub-species of deer found in North America, with three of those living in Canada. In 1982, an estimated 15 million white-tailed deer could be found in Canada and the United States. It's also the deer species most will see at petting zoos and animal sanctuaries, at which time, you are often given opportunity to feed them. Since they are so used to being around people, they will usually take the food out of your hand. It's likely that a child's interest peaks even further for deer plush after having a live encounter with a deer. And how could it not? It's always quite exciting to see wildlife up close and personal. And, it doesn't have to end there - with deer plush, you get to bring it home.
